I’ve been developing a new text mining tool for qualitative social media analytics. I thought a good candidate for my first post would be a simple analysis of a topical and interesting subject. Since I have a few very good friends who have recently joined the controversial “human terrain system”, I thought that mining recent blog conversations about that subject would be good material for a word cloud or two:

1. A traditional, sorted, HTML-based tag cloud:HTML Word Cloud for Blog Discussions about “Human Terrain System”: american anthropological association academics adviser advisers afghanistan american anthropological anthropologist anthropology armed article asked assigns assistant association austere baghdad battle battlefield bitter board brigade brigades called century chain civilian collected combat commanders conflict controversy cords counterinsurgency country criticism critique cultural culture danger david defense dehumanization deployed deployment developed discussed discussion earlier economic effort efforts email embedded embeds enables enrollment ethics ethnographic executive experimental focused freedom gathers graduate griffin grooming group groups habits helbig human human terrain human terrain system human terrain team inform information initiative intelligence interesting iraqi issues knowledge landscape larger leaders level local major mapping marcus mcfate media member members military minds mission morality national notes operating operations parts pentagon people piece political population posted price program programme project public reason reasons refer report research responses security senior serve service shachtman social social scientist soldiers story strong study surname target teams terrain terror times tracy trend undersecretary understand uniformed united states units university wilcox wired working years

2. A graph-style cloud layout:
