Twinfluence and Twitseeker are very cpu-intensive.  I’ve already used three hosts to support them: Bluehost (still the best for simple, low-end hosting), imhosted (OK, but went downhill fast), and inmotionhosting.com (VPS account - by far the most professional tech support that I’ve received anywhere and great for the price).  Even though together, these two sites only use a fraction of their allotted RAM, disk space, and bandwidth… they use 10x to 20x what the hosts tolerate for CPU usage.   And that’s not allowing for growth.

While inmotion has been working extensively (and pro-actively, I might add) with me to get my CPU usage within limits, I’m stuck to either migrating elsewhere or crippling the applications.  So, I am going to experiment with some grid hosting or virtual dedicated options, so long as they fit within the budget of ad revenue that these domains are generating (an unfortunately significant consideration, as some of my hosting alternatives are looking at $150+ a month).

Cross your fingers, and I appreciate your patience.

Interesting. Might Amazon Elastic Cloud Computing (EC2) constitute a feasible solution? I understand there is something of a latency problem for chatty applications, but it seems that wouldn’t be the issue here.

I think your service is useful, but likely due to the recent DNS attack on twitter and your hosting challenges (experience similar stuff myself), I’d like to know if you would be interested in selling ad banner or ad links space on your site?

Also, I’ve been trying to check the twinfluence on @blogworld and it fails out. If I PayPal you $5 can you run the report and email it to me?

Along the lines of that idea, maybe offering subscription levels or one off info buys like the one I proposed might be the better business strategy for you to be successful (I do bus dev work, if you need help with the business plan, let me know.) :)

Actually, I’m interested in EC2… it’s been recommended to me before. However, it would require recoding the database connections, and a learning curve (not insignificant) to implement their data library / API. It’s on the “long list” of things I’d like to eventually noodle around with!

Brett: That’s a lot of content in your comment!
- Yeah, I’d be interesting in selling banner/ad space on Twinfluence. I’ll drop an email.
- I’ll check out the twinfluence reactions to @blogworld, and see what’s up. $5 not necessary, but thanks for the offer!
- subscription and other paid models… hmm, I kicked some of these ideas around early on. I think I’d have to get a lot more serious about what I was offering first. I do have some some new algorithms being collected “behind the scenes” of Twinfluence that if I ever have time to yank out of beta, would make a big difference… but for now, I think I’ll stick to the free/adware model. However, your suggestion and offer is much appreciated!
