Report: 2005 Metro Orlando Film and Entertainment Commission Productivity Survey

From January 1 to February 14, 2003, Innovation Insight performed an annual survey of production activity in the film and entertainment industry for the Metro Orlando Film and Entertainment Commission. The statistics provided in this report are based upon a combination of direct survey of metro Orlando film and entertainment companies, and a corporate database provided by the Commission. The methodology utilized was a continuation of previous annual surveys performed by the Commission.

Combined Statistics: In 2002, the metro Orlando film and entertainment industry supported an estimated 2,555 direct employees and generated an estimated $772.76 million in combined sales revenue. As a whole the industry is characterized by a great majority of small employers and only a few large employers. Area entertainment and tourism giants (e.g., Walt Disney) are important clients for the industry. Most companies are classified in the 71141003 and 71151018 NAICS industry categories, and are located in Orange County (City of Orlando).

Typical Company: Based upon survey and statistical analysis, a typical 2002 film and entertainment company in the metro Orlando region supported 2.5 employees, 10 local hires, and generated approximately $750,000 in revenue and 32.5 production days. In addition, the typcial film and media company has 10.8 production days and 3.3 local hires per employee over the year, has 1 local hire per 3.2 production days, has 1 production day per $10,769 of revenue (based upon reported revenue), and has 1 employee per $116,667 of revenue (which is consistent with most industries as a rough indicator of productivity). The typical company worked on two types of projects (e.g., feature film and national video) over the course of the year.
